It’s April… Time To Get Moving!
Barring an excess of rainy weather, April is the perfect time to really get active in your yard and garden areas again… No doubt there still is clean up and preparation work to do, but you can actually get some more vegetables planted– perennials, trees and shrubs, too! Here’s a list of some things you can get done during the month
- Cut back ornamental grasses that have turned brown and went dormant during the winter months. Make sure to cut stems about 4-5 inches from above the ground in early April.
- Give your place an early taste of spring! Plant some pots of pansies and violas to brighten your porch, while waiting for warmer weather to arrive.
- In order to determine if your soil is ready to work, squeeze a handful of soil into a tight ball, then break the ball apart with your fingers. If the ball crumbles readily, the soil is ready to be worked. If the soil remains clumped, it’s still too wet to work. Keep testing until it’s ready.
- Once new growth appears on trees & shrubs, cut back to green wood any twigs affected by Winterkill.
- Have your soil tested! We can help. Stop by our store to pick up a packet from GMS Laboratories, with instructions on how to collect a sample.
- Plant trees and perennials in late April— weather permitting, of course.
- Sow your grass seed now, to get your lawn growing fast and looking good.
- Keep on planning and planting your vegetable garden. Wait until next month to plant warm season veggies.
- And, especially remember to do this… Celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd by planting a tree! Niepagens is still a collection point for recyclable plastic containers, so remember to bring in your plastic pots and trays for recycling; bring back your cardboard boxes to fill again with plants. We can make Mother Earth a better place to live, by treating her with care and respect… and by recycling as much as possible!
