Container Gardening

Express yourself! With some initial help from Wendell Niepagen’s and by exercising your own imagination, you can do it– with container gardening. Whether you are contemplating the planting of traditional window boxes… large or small outside planters… or light and airy hanging baskets, you should first consider the following recommendations…

• Use containers that have a capacity of between 15-120 quarts. Containers that are smaller than this range restrict the root growth area and dry out very quickly. Also, the size of the container used will be determined by the size and number of plants to be grown. In the case of deep-rooted vegetables, deeper containers are required.
• Be certain that your container has adequate drainage, with drainage holes at least ½” across.
•  Make sure that your soil or plant media permits rapid, even drainage, but still retains enough moisture to keep the plants evenly moist. We recommend a peat moss-based soil or “soil-less” mix, adding a slow release fertilizer.
• As soil is added to the container, you should leave about 2” of space between the top of the container and the soil level. You can add soil to “top it off”, after you plant.
• In open, sunny areas, container planters will lose moisture easily, so be advised that soil moisture levels will need to be monitored regularly and religiously, especially during hot and dry weather. Fertilizing with a water soluble fertilizer weekly is a must, in order to maintain a gorgeous planter.

By following these simple guidelines, you will be well on your way to creating many stunning container plantings! And, if you get stuck on which combinations to plant, just ask your friends at Niepagen. The possibilities are endless!

Water Gardening

There is nothing so calming as the presence of water. The vision and sound of waves lapping up on the shores of a lake, pond or ocean… the glistening light and trickling of a mountain stream… the dramatic sight and gushing force of a tropical waterfall– all these bring a feeling of relaxation to us. Now, you can recreate this sense of peace and beauty in your own personal environment with water gardening! Whether you desire the calm and tranquility of still water, such as water-filled urns, containers or a small, in-ground pond… or the drama and excitement of moving water, such as a waterfall or fountain, Wendell Niepagen Greenhouses offers the products, materials, plants, knowledge and ideas to help you create a watery paradise on your own property. Whatever environment you wish to create, first, you should consider the following basic issues before venturing into the unique world of water gardening…

• The best choice for installation of a water garden is a well-drained location. If building a pond, soil on the site should feature good drainage, so that there is no shifting or settling of the terrain that might cause the pond liner to crack or break.
Low areas where water run-off from surrounding landscape is common should be avoided– it would only cause problems with sediment filling into the pond at a later date.
• Also, consider a location that has easy access to a water source. This will be a valuable asset, when maintenance and cleaning is required.
• Choose a location with adequate sunlight. Most water plants that you may use in and around your water garden will require 5-8 hours of sunlight during the day. Ponds with a capacity of less than 100 gallons of water generally perform better with afternoon shade. A shadier spot can be used for your water garden, but will limit the selection of plants that you can use.
• A location where overhanging trees are present should probably be avoided, too. Falling leaves can decay in the water, eventually endangering fish and plant life, by disrupting the environmental balance of the pond’s ecosystem. Dead leaves can also clog pumps and filters, causing equipment failure and eventual pond stagnation. Placement of an in-ground pond too close to a tree can also damage the tree’s root system.

By keeping these ideas in mind and consulting Wendell Niepagen’s in the early stages of your water garden project, you are sure to create a relaxing area and focal point on your property that you will enjoy for years to come. We know that you can do it! Ask us how to get started…
